April Newsletter 2026
April is Autism Awareness Month, and for me, it’s a time to bring light not just to awareness, but to understanding, compassion, and the unique strengths of those living on the spectrum. Autism is not one-size-fits-all. There are many levels, from profound autism, where individuals may be nonverbal and experience intense challenges like self-harm or elopement, to moderate levels like my son, Curwood, who is nonverbal yet able to engage with the world in his own way, to high-functioning individuals who communicate and navigate life with subtle differences. It’s important that we recognize these distinctions so we can better support each individual and family where they are.
As a mother, this journey has been both humbling and transformative. My son is 13 years old, and while he may not express himself with words, he communicates in ways that have taught me to listen deeper and love stronger. There are moments that are incredibly challenging, times when I know he feels frustration but cannot fully express it, or when I have to piece together what he needs through patience and intuition. I’ve had moments of questioning myself, wondering if I could have done more, or if I missed something along the way. That weight is something many parents carry quietly. But alongside those thoughts, there is also growth, faith, and an unwavering commitment to keep moving forward.
What keeps me grounded are the small but meaningful victories. Recently, Curwood has been learning how to play the Nintendo Switch, something that brings him so much joy. He has also been working on walking with his heels down instead of tiptoeing, and I’ve been supporting him by massaging his legs most nights, using the skills I’ve developed over the years. These moments remind me that we are always being given tools, resources, and inspiration, whether through other parents, professionals, or our own inner guidance. Not everything we try works, but the willingness to keep trying, to stay consistent, and to remain open is what creates progress.
This month is also a reminder that no family should feel alone in this journey. There are parents raising children with profound autism who face daily challenges that most people cannot fully see or understand. A simple act of kindness, support, or even a prayer can mean more than you know. I truly believe that breakthroughs are coming, and that the efforts of families, advocates, and professionals today are paving the way for a better tomorrow. If you feel called, reach out to a family, offer help, or contribute in a way that aligns with your heart.
Thank you to everyone who has supported me and my son along the way, your energy, love, and prayers have carried us more than words can express. Our journey continues, and while it may not always be easy, it is filled with purpose, growth, and gratitude for this incredible community.
Peace & Blessings,
Linda and Curwood
PS this is your affirmation of the month:
I honor every step of this journey. I lead with love, stay open to guidance, and trust that brighter breakthroughs are ahead.
